Our Story.

Makanalani (meaning Gift from Heaven) is a beautiful non-profit camp located on the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii where kids can come experience God’s love on a 130-acre farm surrounded by animals and the beautiful Hawaiian scenery completely free of charge.

Since opening our doors in 2012, we have welcomed over 10,000 guests to stay and enjoy the property. The hope is to be able to provide a completely free place for kids to come to camp for years and years to come. You can click here to learn more about the amazing life-changing camps at Makanalani.

When Makanalani first began hosting free camps for kids back in 2012, the plan was to fund the camps and the property through working our 130 acre farm.  We started a wide array of farm projects, including citrus orchards, specialty tropical fruit, sheep, dairy cows, honey and herbal teas all of which we still have.  However, we quickly realized farming alone would not keep up with the costs of the property and with housing the free camps. The ongoing property needs are many -  constant upkeep of the 130 acres and keeping the jungle at bay, repairs to infrastructure and equipment, insurance, taxes and similar ongoing costs.

To address this shortfall in the long term and in a sustainable way, and with our pledge to never charge for kids camps, we started what we now call, the Makanalani Group. This group is designed to support Makanalani Kids through small startups and ongoing entrepreneurial endeavors, and then managing the resulting small businesses in an ethical and sustainable way. Since 2014 we have started several local businesses on Kauai that each donate all of their profits to support Makanalani and its camps. Yes, one hundred percent of the profits go towards keeping Makanalani open, well maintained, and always free for visiting groups of kids. Thanks to these businesses in the Makanalani Group and the dedicated team that runs them, we are reaching our goal of Makanalani staying open and free for many years to come!
